Technology Innovations

The Pursuit of Innovation

In the city of Kawasaki, Japan's 'Silicon Valley', nearly a thousand individuals are working together at Toshiba's Corporate Research & Development Center, pioneering new technologies to shape our future.

Talented research teams in Europe also contribute to our R&D success. Our Telecommunications Research Laboratory is developing new systems for broadband, and working with top European universities and governments to ensure we lead the way in the development of next-generation mobile.

Our Quantum Information Group is constantly challenging the computer hacker: working on the technique of 'single photon cryptography' to help make communication more secure.

Meanwhile, our Speech Technology Group is drastically enhancing speech recognition technology and text-to-speech synthesis systems, and soon Toshiba's technology will support the in-car navigation systems of leading European car manufacturers. Toshiba is so committed to remaining at the forefront of new technology that we plan to spend $10.5 billion globally between now and March 2006.

0.85" HDD

Our 0.85" HDD recently entered the Guinness World Records Book as the world's smallest hard disk drive. Capable of storing two to four gigabytes of data, the drive will play a huge role in the development of smaller, lighter gadgets, such as PDA wristwatches, keyrings or even sunglasses!

Godfather of DVD

Working with Time Warner, Toshiba developed the basic concept and essential technologies for DVD. We are Chair of the DVD Forum and are now working on the next generation - HD (High Definition) DVD.

Alternative energy

Toshiba has developed the world's smallest direct methanol fuel cell. This thumb-sized prototype, weighing only 8.5g, is small enough to be integrated into a wireless mobile phone headset but still efficient enough to power a mini digital audio player for as long as 20 hours on a single charge.

SD-Book

LCD technology in this 'digital book' makes it as easy to read as a PC and easy to hold as a paperback. The book is designed for both consumer and business applications, such as mobile e-learning.

3D fashion simulation

Virtual modelling of clothes and cosmetics is taken to a new level with this 3D fashion simulation system allowing you to virtually try on clothes without having to step into a changing room.

Screen Viewing Angle Control System to protect privacy

Spies beware - Toshiba has restored personal privacy with an innovative technology that gives the user complete control of a display's viewing angle so that anyone looking at it from the side will see a distorted view.

ApriAlpha robot

This little robot is the 'package' of all Toshiba's R&D expertise. It is designed to be a 'life support partner' that can support household chores and help care for the aged or sick.
